Bonokeling
Every year, descendants of the Bonokeling walk around fourty kilometers from Cilacap, Indonesia, to the ancestral grave in Banyumas. Carrying offerings from the harvest, they retrace the path known as Perlon Unggahan an annual ritual to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad as well as a form of spiritual humility.
The origin of Kyai Bonokeling remains shrouded in mystery, yet his teachings live on in five noble values: prayer, gratitude, knowledge, justice, and self-restraint. These five principles, likened to the fingers of a hand, continue to guide lives and inspire the devotion of thousands of pilgrims who preserve this tradition to this day.
For them, the walk is not merely a physical journey but also a spiritual one a reminder to stay faithful to their ancestors, safeguard cultural heritage, and walk through life with wisdom.
